Miners’ Orange 2009
Gohan-Sabuk, Korea
Around five hundred local people were invited to join the Miners’ Orange Parade. Participants walked from Sabuk to Gohan in Korea. A small group was asked to wear traditional miners’ clothes borrowed from the regional coal museum whilst the rest wore and/or carried certain orange items.
Gohan-Sabuk is a former mining area where the Korean government recently established a casino business. The parade was therefore aimed at questioning this social and cultural transition and the impact it has had and is continuing to have on the villagers’ lives.
The colour orange symbolised an uncertain identity and this applied equally to the villages and their residents.
