Miners’ Orange 2009

Gohan-Sabuk, Korea

Miners’ Orange was a parade organised by the artist, a walk from Sabuk to Gohan, both former mining towns. Around five hundred local people and visitors from outside the town were invited. In 1998, the Korean government established a casino in Gohan-Sabuk, to stimulate rapid economic development. Since then social problems have increased. The parade partially revived demonstration scenes from the coal closure period by taking the form of a protest, but a protest without any slogan, theme or purpose. the project tried to reveal the complexity of the modernisation process and the uncertain identity of the post-industrial villages and their residents.
