Looking Down from the Sky

2017

Looking Down from the Sky is a performance composed of five sections; intro, three developments and cadenza. The piece is written as a ‘photo-score’ and embroidered onto fabric. The score is sourced from archival photos of protests and demonstrations in South Korea from the 1960s – 1990s.

The embroidered works function as musical scores for the performance. The shapes of the score represent specific durations, pitch and sound-effects that can be appropriated by the performers. The performers are invited to recreate their own music based upon these, removing a degree of control from the artist.
