Echoes was first commissioned by Venice Agendas 2017: The Contract and premiered at the Venice Biennale in 2017. It was subsequently presented at Turner Contemporary, Margate, and in Folkestone as part of the same programme. The work was also performed at Spike Island, Bristol, in December 2017.
Echoes is a relay of one person’s protest, realised through individual performances responding to a soundtrack created by the artist; a compilation of political statements by public figures ranging from Donald Trump to Michael Moore.
As the musicians improvise musical responses to the soundtrack through headphones, the work becomes a one person protest, raising ideas of equality and difference through individual expression.
The entire process of organising and realising the performance relies on web communication echoing the setup of a flash mob event. Voluntary participants were invited through open call without filtering based on their experience.
