Double Encounter

2009

A crowd of faces made up of men, women, and children are embroidered on a single layer of transparent fabric. These portraits are taken from living and historic characters, individuals encountered and photographed on the street. Mixed with these faces East Asian statutes of celebrated individuals, found occupying similar street corners and public squares.

The project examines statutes being representative of society as much as being representational of the individuals they depict. These are people, historically disproportionately male, that have for one reason or another been selected above their peers.
